WAC Social Programs Expenditure

WAC has undertaken numerous Social Programs for the Waanyi Community and between 2012 to 2022 the total expenditure has been almost $5 million.

Student Exchange Program

2012-2025

This program provides remote Indigenous children with new experiences and career possibilities through diverse interactions. The first tour in 2011 was a success, leading to continued interest from community members, increased school attendance, and improved attitudes toward education. The program aims to broaden horizons and is an investment in the future of young Indigenous Australians. The tour will resume in 2023, serving as an annual event to incentivize school attendance and bring positive opportunities to entire communities.

The Waanyi Language Program (WLP) by Waanyi Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) revitalizes the Waanyi language, crucial to Waanyi culture and the Doomadgee community. The program began in 2007 to restore the language before the remaining fluent speakers passed. The creation of a Waanyi Dictionary is now complete, and the progress in revitalizing the language has developed a sense of pride and respect for Waanyi language and culture. The WLP is promoted through the annual Waanyi Language Festival and the Annual Waanyi Language and Culture Camp, encouraging language use and immersion for speakers, linguists, and community members.

Doomadgee Rodeo

The Annual Doomadgee Rodeo is one of the premier sporting events in the Gulf region, bringing competitors and spectators from Borroloora, Brisbane, Normanton, Mount Isa and Cloncurry. Those with the skill and nerve can take part in the Open Bullock, Station Buck and Jump and Novice Bull while the Ladies’ Steer Ride and Potty Ride remain popular with the crowds. The WAC and Northern Project Contracting have proudly supported the event, for a number of years. Alongside the Rodeo, WAC will supports the Waanyi Language Festival, which gives people of all ages the chance to explore the Waanyi Language.

Waanyi PBC

Waanyi Aboriginal Corporation has taken an active role in providing accounting, governance and le-gal assistance to the Waanyi Native Title Aboriginal Corporation as well as providing funds to assist the PBC.

Land Rights

Waanyi Aboriginal Corporation is an active supporter of land rights, not only via the Waanyi PBC but the ARC Land Rights Project and will carefully target future land rights projects.

Bidunggu

Over the last 12 months WAC has provided funds to finance fuel for the Bidunggu community amounting to $64,638.
